#89 A Book Question & Answer

Since I posted a book review today, I though I’d do a book meme to go along with it. I found this on Steph’s blog and it seemed interesting. I’m still clinging to having my blog lifestyle and since I’ve not had time to read lately (between being sick and Little Miss figuring out the mechanics behind walking) it’s been a little lackluster in the book department. I hope you give this a go too!
What are you reading right now?
I’m reading The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. It’s been in the bathroom for over a month and I still haven’t got around to starting it properly!
Do you have any idea what you’ll read after you’ve finished this book?
I have a pile of unread books by my bed but I think I’m going to go with The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick.
Five books you’ve always wanted to read but have never got round to?
The Beautiful & The Damned and Tender is the Night both by F Scott Fitzgerald, I am a huge Gatsby fan but I just never got around to these two. The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis, Before I Go To Sleep by S J Watson and now all of A Song of Ice & Fire by George R.R Martin (lets count it as one) after watching Game of Thrones.
What magazines do you have in your bathroom/lounge right now?
Marie Claire & Cosmo are both on the bathroom floor. I normally buy one or two magazines a month/
What’s the worst book you ever read?
Oh god I’m going to be hated for this.. but Enduring Love by Ian McEwan. I had to read it for A Level Literature and I literally burnt it after I finished my exam. No lies or regrets. I hate Atonement too.. I just hate his style of  writing.
What book is really popular but you really hated?
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Was so so bored reading this. I usually hate books like this and find them so overrated.
What’s the one book you recommend to everybody?
I don’t think I have ONE book.. I like a lot of books and a lot of books have really gotten under my skin over the years. I just finished The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and I’ll probably recommend that for a while. Last year I recommended The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanna Collins and The Book Theif by Markus Zusak..
What are your three favourite poems?
As cliche as it is, I love E E Cummings, I Carry Your Heart With Me, Deaths and Entrances by Dylan Thomas & O Captain! My Captain by Walt Whitman. I admit, most of these were found over the years through Tumblr.
Where do you usually get your books?
As gifts, from Amazon Marketplace or in charity shops.
Where do you usually read your books?
In the bath or when i’m traveling. Somewhere baby free so I can just relax.
When you were little, did you have any reading habits?
I used to go up until my room and shut the door and read a book cover to cover. I barely had one I was only half way through. I was either reading a book or I wasn’t.
What’s the last book you stayed up half the night to read?
Probably The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. I’d been reading it for ages and just wanted it finished. I don’t really stay up reading anymore because I share a room with Little Miss. This will change later on this year when I’m in my own place again.
Have you ever ‘faked’ reading a book?
Probably at school. I hated assigned books.
Have you ever bought a book just because you liked the cover?
Yep. Loads over the years. I do like a pretty cover! I can’t actually remember any off the top of my head right now though..
What was your favourite book as a child?
When I was really young, I loved Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet & Allan Ahlberg, I just bought it for my daughter and she loves it too! As I got older I think it changed most years.. ones I still love from my childhood are Matilda by Roald Dahl, The Secret Garden & A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, The Chronicals of Narnia by CS Lewis, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.
Which book changed your life?
The Harry Potter series. I wouldn’t be where I am to day, the person I am today or have the friends I have today if it wasn’t for that fact I was totally and utterly obsessed with JK Rowling’s masterpieces.
What is your favourite passage from a book?
This one is ridiculous. I like so many quotes and passages in books that it makes it impossible to chose. However I’ve gone with one from The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger as I read this book while going through a break up so a lot of the quotes about loss really resounded with me. I cried for a day after finishing it.
There is only one page left to write on. I will fill it with words of only one syllable. I love. I have loved. I will love.”
It’s so beautiful and it gave me hope in such a sad time.
Who are your top five favourite authors?
John Green
Joanne Harris
JK Rowling
Kathleen Tessaro
David Nicholls
What is your favourite classic book?
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, all of them actually.
Five notable mentions?
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Hand That First Held Mine by Maggie O’Farrell
Looking for Alaska by John Green
The Luminous Life of Lily Aphrodite by Beatrice Collins
The Musicians Daughter by Rupert Holmes
