#210 Recipe No.16 Cinnamon and Honey Figs

Firstly, let me just say that this recipe isn’t so much a recipe but more of an ingredient inspiration. Recently Sarah of Lovely Strumpet has been posting the most scrummy looking meals on her instagram, a lot of them containing figs, which is a fruit I have to admit has never ever appealed to me. I don’t even like fig rolls! However, Sarah convinced me that they do in face taste good, both in sweet and savoury dishes. So when I saw them on offer in Aldi for 79p for four, I thought, what the heck? And I bought them. At first I didn’t know what to do with them, but after some research I thought I’d try them first as a dessert. I asked around for what flavours go best with figs and was informed they go nice with such things as honey and cinnamon which bring out their natural sweetness. And this is how my recipe was born.
It’s incredibly simple but tastes delicious and is relatively healthy! I am currently trying to loose a little bit of weight before going to Paris so I can justify living on brie and bread for four days. So far, it’s going well. I probably haven’t lost any weight but I feel better for it and since Little Miss has given up the bobo (bottle) I’m able to switch back to skimmed milk as she prefers water or juice. Anyway, this post isn’t about my eating habits, it’s about my delicious way to eat a fig!

Ingredients
1 or 2 figs per person
1 tbsp of honey per fig
1 tsp of butter per fig
Cinnamon
Fat Free Greek Yoghurt
What You Need
Baking Tray/Oven Dish, Tablespoon, Teaspoon, Knife, Tin Foil
  1. Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 7/425F/220C. Line the baking tray or oven dish with tin foil.
  2. Place the figs onto the baking tray. Using a knife cut a cross in the top and ease apart so they resemble a flower.
  3. Add a teaspoon of butter to the opening of each fig. Then spoon over a tablespoon of honey.
  4. Sprinkle each fig with cinnamon, use as much as you like. I didn’t use too much as I didn’t want it to over power the fig flavour.
  5. Pop in the oven for about 8 minutes.
  6. Remove from the oven, plate each fig up with a healthy spoonful of Greek yoghurt and finally pour over the remaining juices.

I was pretty impressed with this recipe and I ended up making up one of these desserts every night to go with my dinner as it was more filling than just a yoghurt! I’ve purchased some goats cheese and parma ham since so I’m going to attempt a savoury salad using figs this week. I’ll let you know how it goes!

How do you eat figs? Any dish recommendations?
