July 2014 Birchbox, First Impressions

I can’t believe I’ve left this until now to write, but I have just had so many other things I wanted to blog about! I received my second Birchbox a few weeks ago and I’m as happy with it was I was with my first box. I honestly never thought I’d enjoy getting a beauty sample box as much as I do with Birchbox. The sample sizes are generous and not those annoying sachets and they definitely give you enough to get a goo feel of the product.
This month the Birchbox theme was Sun, Sea and Sand, very apt since we are actually having some lovely weather at the moment. Everything that came in my box would be perfect to take away on holiday but some of the colour/scents are usually what I’d pick for myself. Over all, as usual, satisfaction was incredibly high and this time there wasn’t one product I haven’t kept to use myself! Although my mum did try and take the nail varnish away on holiday with her… cheeky!

Like with last month, the unboxing bit was the most exciting. I was away when my box arrived so my mum picked it up one day after work from the Post Office while I was at her house. When she give it to me I headed straight up to my old bedroom to open it in peace. It felt so special. When I came downstairs to show my mum she seemed really impressed (and thus she tried to steal the nail varnish!) I have to admit I was quite relieved not to receive the coconut milk as the stuff makes me feel sick!

Anyway, what I did get;

Benefit Cosmetics The Porefessional
An award winning primer that magically erases pores and leaves skin velvety.
I have raved about this product since it was first launched and until I became a mummy on a budget, I used it religiously. Hell, when I have birthday or Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket I still splash out on it. It is my all time favourite primer so I was INCREDIBLY happy to find it in this months Birchbox, especially when my high street version (Maybelline’s Baby Skin) had just run out! This sample size is slightly bigger than the regular sample size you get in sets (or free with Elle) and since I use it sparingly I know it will last me a decent amount of time. If you want to splash out on a base that really helps minimise the appearance of pimples, I really recommend this.

Whish Three Whishes Lavender Body Butter
Not your granny’s lavender – this sweet-scented antioxidant-rich lotion nourishes skin.
I’ll be honest, I would have never in a million years bought a lotion that smells of lavender.. because, as mentioned above, it reminds me of my grandmother who is lavender obsessed. However this doesn’t have that same scent, not at all. I used it last night after shaving my legs and it left my skin silky soft. Although the scent isn’t heavily “granny’s perfume” it’s still not really for me so I was incredibly happy when it didn’t linger. The product itself does exactly what it says on the tube, nourishes skin without that heaviness you usually get from a body butter.

Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream
“A light, hard working formula to brighten the eye area and keep wrinkles at bay.”
I’m a newbie to the world of Balance Me, but already this is the third product I’ve tried in the last month and I have t admit, I am impressed. I was a little bit dubious about eye cream after my disaster with the one I bought from Kiehls (it practically ripped the skin from my lids) but this one is very gentle on the delicate skin and I do think the dark circles look greatly improved by it. I have been using this every morning since receiving it and although I don’t see any lasting improvement it does mean I have been going make up free a lot more as I don’t look like my usual zombie self!

LAQA & Co Sheer Lip Lube in Menatour
“A high gloss pencil to add a pop of sheer, nourishing and wearable colour.”
Firstly, yes I did laugh at lube (sorry, I’m immature) secondly, this colour isn’t half as scary as it looks. I was slightly apprehensive after swatching it on my hand but since it’s so sheer it just gives your lips a slight purple tint. It wouldn’t be something I’d ever pick out for myself, the colour looks so offensively vivid but I think I will get a fair amount of wear out of it now I have actually tried it. The consistency is lovely, very light and it actually reminds me of the new Benebalms. I have never heard of LAQA & Co but I will definitely be looking out for them from now on.

Models Own Nail Polish in Rocket
“Stay on trend down to the tips of your toes with these gorgeous hard-wearing polishes.”
Like with the Lip Lube this isn’t a colour I would have ever chosen for myself, in fact I’m not really a glitter person at all during the summer but what I do like about Models Own glitter polishes is the fact the glitter spreads across the nail rather than clogging up one part. Which is something I rave. In fact, I like Models Own in general so despite the colour which probably won’t see light until the festive season, it is a product I rate.

& The Little Lifestyle Extra… Filosofille 4 Sided Nail Buffer (which I did give to my sister, I don’t have enough nails to buff!)

Once again I am incredibly impressed with the products, the brands, the sizes and the presentation that Birchbox offers. A Birchbox subscription costs £12.95 (which includes the postage) and you get a great selection of items to try in decent size sample bottles (or in the case of Models Own, full size). I will be continuing my subscription and recommending it to anyone who asks about beauty boxes. Watch out for the August Birchbox coming soon!

Do you subscribe to a beauty box? If yes, which one?
