There Is Something About Cosplay..*

I have had a rather horrible day today so to cheer myself up I wanted to write a little bit about my new hobby. This year I discovered the world of cosplay.. well when I say discovered, I mean it has become a part of my life. I always knew of cosplay, but I wasn’t sure where or when it was appropriate. But then we (as in Bee & I) booked tickets to LFCC back in March, and I was finally going to get to do it.. but not just cosplay, Disney cosplay.
Cosplay has always appealed to me. Since a small child I have loved to dress up. I have been in many a drama clubs and i’ve lost count of times i’ve been on stage be it performing musically, theatre or dance. I even studied drama at university. Why? I have a constant need to be someone else. Being myself has never been enough for me. I’m not sure why or when it started but there it is, in black and white. And if I could be anyone else in the world, I’d be a Disney princess!

There are very few characters outside of Disney that I would like to dress up as.. Padme from Star Wars, Tauriel from The Hobbit, Serena from Pokemon, Snow/Belle/Anna/Ruby from Once Upon a Time, Daenerys from Game of Thrones, Anya or Thumbelina (from the Don Bluth movies), Princess Peach or maybe even Link from Zelda. But within the Disney World there are LOADS of different characters I’d happily dress up as now that I’ve opened the flood gates.

I have a Pinterest board with over 200 pins dedicated to cosplay. Ideas for myself or just ones I simply think look amazing. I want to share some of the ones I’d love to try with you all today;

These are some of my favourites. At the top of my list is Anna’s coronation dress.. something I’m a little obsessed with and I’d take a replica over a designer gown any day. I’d also really love to do Alice or Rapunzel. Not pictured but also on my list is Wendy, Eilonwy, Mary Poppins (in her blouse and bow tie not her Jolly Holiday dress) and Cinderella’s pink dress.
As you all know, my dream cosplay was Ariel in her blue dress from The Little Mermaid which is what I did for LFCC, with Bee as Vanessa (Ursula in her human form). The dress was made by the lovely Claire at The Princess & the Frock. Not having to wear a wig was a total bonus and the dress fitted perfectly. I felt fantastic and I wanted to dress that way every day for the rest of my life.

I now have three wigs, Snow White, Tinker Bell & Merida.. some wings, handmade Tink shoes and two dresses, my Ariel one, and last week I added Snow White made by my Bee. It’s not 100% finished but I love it so much and I can’t express how proud I am of all the techniques she’s mastered while in her sweat shop for Princess dresses (aka her dining room). I felt amazing wearing it although looking back, I know I need to loose a few pounds to feel truly comfortable in it (or just not eat that day!) In fact, I aim to loose a dress size in the New Year and maybe then i’ll feel a lot more confident.

My biggest problem at the moment is storage. My daughter is getting a dressing up stand for Christmas but it’s child size and no good for me (nor do I have the space in my room). I really need to invest in something as at the moment I have then hanging on the back of my bedroom door and my wigs all on stands on the top of my room. I’m always on the look out for some new pine furniture as that’s what I have in my room as my great aunt gave me a vintage beautiful full length mirror that I wanted everything to tie in with.

Once i’ve lost the weight, had my sister fix the wigs and Snow’s dress is complete, I’m hoping to take some great photos like I did last year in my Ariel costume as that was part of the fun! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I have the proper “princess” look like Megan of Briar Rose does but I enjoy it, so who cares?

In a dream world I would love to turn my hobby into a job. I know now there are such things as companies that hire out princesses for kids birthday parties. Although I don’t think I’m pretty and skinny enough to be hired by one of those, I would love to have the right business mind to start my own. Imagine being a different princess every weekend? I think it would be the closest to being a face character in Disney World I could ever get. But first, I should probably just learn to sew!

If you could turn any hobby into a job, what would you do?
