Where Amy Ate – The Great British Cupcakery

If there is one place in Newcastle that I always recommend people try if they’re visiting it’s The Great British Cupcakery on the Quayside. The Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne will always hold a special place in my heart having worked there while living in the city, but The Great British Cupcakery always stands out as the must place to visit. I was lucky enough to attend it’s opening almost two years ago and it was a great night. Since then I’ve made a point of visiting whenever i’ve been passing that way, sometimes to sit in and sometimes simply buying a goody to eat on the go. They always have such a fantastic selection of cakes, scones, tray bakes and if you have more time you can choose to sit in as they have a great lunchtime menu.

So of course, when I was offered the chance to go and sample the afternoon tea, I wasn’t going to say no. I took Little Miss along with me as my date which ended up being great because I was able to see what was available as a “child’s portion” in the way of afternoon tea. When I usually think of afternoon tea I think of small portions, bite sized even but this definitely wasn’t what either of us received at The Great British Cupcakery!

Situated just off the Quayside on Queen Street, The Great British Cupcakery is truly the shabby chic dream. All pastel coloured with that distinct sweet smell of a bakery. Little Miss and I were treated like royalty the whole time we were there despite it being quite busy. Little Miss had milk along with two cheese sandwiches (crusts removed) and a whole selection of sweet treats including a full sized red velvet cupcake, a chocolate brownie, millionaire shortbread and the biggest mars bar krispy we’d ever seen. On my three tier stand I had four sandwiches of various flavours, egg salad, cheese and pickle, ham and pease pudding and coronation chicken.. the only one I didn’t try was the ham and pease pudding. There was also a cheese scone, and what I originally thought to be a fruit scone with cream and raspberry jam ended up having dark chocolate chips in instead of raisins, right up my street. Then of course the delicious tray bakes and finally a carrot cake cupcake. I had all of this along with a huge tea pot of english breakfast. In the end we couldn’t eat everything so the kind server boxed everything up for us to take home. For the adult & child’s afternoon tea it came to £29.90. I have absolutely no faults with the place, in fact our afternoon tea experience made me love the place all the more.

The Great British Cupcakery would be perfect place to host a birthday or even a hen party (afternoon tea is much more up my street than cocktail making these days!) They offer great prices for groups as well as offering a bespoke cake making service.
