Things to Do With Kids – Building a Fort*

As I’m focusing on parenting on this blog, I thought I’d share some of the things Little Miss and I enjoy doing together. As it’s just the two of us, we have a very strange relationship especially since I’m incapable of always being the grown up. Due the fact I do have some bad days with anxiety where I don’t want to leave the house, we have to find ways to keep entertained, and one of these is building a fort in the sitting room. It started last summer when my parents were away on holiday. I was really struggling to cope being alone (I see my mum nearly every day) and helping my sister with my nephew that I mentally shut down. One morning I got up and knew I had to spend a day completely detaching myself from responsibily. So we built a fort together and then spent all day in it with Disney dvds and snacks and then take out in the evening. It was magical. Since then, we always try to better ourselves with the new fort we build and I can tell with snow on the way this week a fort day is definitely on the horizon!

I have a rather small sitting room but we manage to make a decent size fort that fits myself, Little Miss and our cat Elsa in (or on top). The sofa makes up the back of the fort, then I use my two arm chairs for this by sitting them back to back with a gap between. Bedsheets make up the roof and inside the bottom is my double quilt folded so it’ll be comfortable to sit on. Then we gather up some blankets and cushions to keep us warm. The fort is built pointing towards the tv so we can lie back and chill out. The only thing missing is the light. The last time we built a fort it was summery and light all day, but at the moment it never feels like daytime so I should probably invest in some lighting from ledhut, led lights would definitely give our fort more of a fairy princess edge which would be right up LM’s street.

Have you ever built a fort?

Yes, I’m not ashamed to say it hasn’t been that long since I last did it either. It’s still cool to build a fort, put twinkle lights up and day dream. Its a great way to forget about work lol.
