Fun and Active Family Holidays*

There is absolutely nothing in this world as exciting as embarking upon an adventure, and no one better to share such an escapade with than your family. Parents relish the opportunity to lead their little ones into the unknown, while children will no doubt adore this leap into the great beyond – and a handful of accompanying activities they’ve probably never tried before.

Family holidays of any kind are a blessing, rewarding hardworking families with a little downtime, and the opportunity to spend quality moments together while trying new things. Holidays are a treat to compensate for the sacrifices we all regularly make, and a chance to rediscover one another in a setting that’s far removed from the chaos of home life, as well as a means of accessing a whole host of brand new experiences from which everlasting memories are born.

Adventure is never too far away, my friends; but where will you choose to go for yours?

Inspiration for your next fun family holiday
Before heading out into the great beyond it’s absolutely essential to be prepared; while packing for any holiday is important it takes a little longer to ensure you’re all set for an adventure holiday – there’s nothing worse than embarking on a great quest to discover you’re ill-equipped for the conditions, or the activities you’re going to be enjoying. Seasonal clothing is, of course, absolutely essential, while specialist equipment, including walking boots, water bottles, backpacks for carrying supplies, and insect repellent are also must-haves – as are guidebooks and maps, a first aid kit, GPS receivers, and a means for carrying and cooking food if you’ll be staying out away from it all. For families tackling particularly strenuous activities, compression wear is another necessity; how else do you suppose you’ll ease muscle pain, warm up your circulation, and prevent injury?

Your bags are packed. So, to those destinations…

Bushcraft in the UK
Thanks to the popularity of Bear Grylls, Ray Mears, and Ben Fogle, and the survivalist programmes they present, bushcraft family breaks have become the must-experience family getaway. Imagine heading deep into the woods with just your family – and a guide – for company, getting completely back to nature, and then cosying down in front of a campfire that you built with you own fair hands.

Bushcraft breaks aim to teach a variety of skills, including den building, foraging, campfire starting, and wildlife spotting, and will ensure that you and your family could survive a weekend in the forest if you became lost. More than that, though, such a break is a great way to introduce your children to the great outdoors, and to remember some of the most wonderful aspects of our own beautiful country.

Exploring the Scottish Highlands
Few wild places are as exciting as the Scottish Highlands, and your family will discover so many opportunities for adventure not far from home at all. Whether you’re rock climbing, hiking, white water rafting, wild swimming, cycling, horse riding, or undertaking an adventure weekend involving archery, survival skills, or fishing, Scotland boasts so many fun activities that your whole family will enjoy discovering – and completing. Experience fresh air as it was meant to be inhaled, spectacular scenery, incredible wildlife, and so much more as you head into deep forests, and circumnavigate breathtaking lochs. If you embark upon just one family adventure break this year, the Scottish Highlands are certainly worth a look.

Rock climbing in Spain
Perhaps a little further afield, but no less exciting, is Spain; renowned amongst families as being an ideal beach location, Spain is also a fantastic holiday destination for those in search of adventure. Well, it is blessed with some incredible hills and mountains, after all. Indeed, rock climbing in Spain provides ample opportunities for quality family time together, as you work as a team to tackle outcrops and peaks, and reward yourselves with a tasty meal afterwards. The views from the top of your mountain peak will no doubt be incredible, and you’ll discover a real sense of achievement following every ascent. Spain’s rock climbing community is an active one, and there will be ascents of varying degrees of difficulty for every family – ideal for beginners, or those taking it easy.

A Northern Lights adventure in Finland
If you and your family are dreaming of discovering an icy wonderland filled with adventure then do consider Finland the home of the northern lights, endless snow and ice, and plenty of activities to boot. Those choosing to explore Finland will enjoy tramping through snowfields, riding dog sleds, experiencing the thrill of being pulled along by a team of reindeer, and meeting the local people, as well as undertaking all manner of snow sports, and magical night-time adventures in search of the aurora borealis. Whale watching and Santa experiences are also popular amongst those visiting Finland, while you’ll be captivated by the country’s incredible natural landscape, and beauty.

Whether you’re scaling a glacier in Norway, swimming with a myriad of colourful fish amongst the corals of Egypt, or meeting the wildlife on Safari, this planet is your oyster – and your family time its prized pearl. You see, there are few adventures as great as the family holiday, and it’s so easy to rediscover what you love about each other while embarking upon such a trip. Whatever you do, embrace every moment and endeavour to see as much as you can; just don’t forget to pack everything you’ll need for such an escapade.

Enjoy, and don’t forget to tell me all about it once you get back.
