5 Places to Sell Things When Money Gets Tight*

Being self employed means I don’t happen to have a steady wage coming in. Sometimes I earn better than average wage, sometimes I barely earn anything depending on the work I put in and what’s available it is. This means some months sees money being a lot tighter for LM and I. Because of this I look for other things I can do to make up any extra money I need.

Like most people I have a lot of unused items lying around my house that could be put to better use by other people, and that’s why if I’m a little short on cash I usually sell things. Over the years i’ve found different places are better for selling different things and that’s what I’m sharing today.Here are 5 places to sell your stuff when money is getting tight;

Unwanted Gift Cards
Sometimes we receive a gift card to somewhere we never shop and then it just lies in the drawer until it expires. However there is a website online where you can sell unwanted gift cards and either receive credit to the website, cash or an Amazon card. That website is Zeek.  I recently sold an M&S card and received an Amazon card just worth slightly less than the original card that I can now put towards LM’s Christmas presents (as there was nothing in M&S).

Unwanted Books
For me, Books are something I have a lot of and will never use again. I have my favourites which I do read multiple times but then I have some I just keep for keeping sake but the idea of just leaving them at a charity shop seems like such a waste. My best friend Bee introduced me to Ziffit at the start of the year and so far I must have made over £50 by scanning book bar codes on my phone , printing out a label and sending them off. It’s been a godsend!

Unwanted Tech
Every time I get a new phone I always sell off my old one using some kind of website online. I usually see which one is offering the best price and send it to that one. There are loads available that do this and most of them even take damaged phones. Nowadays a lot are taking other kinds of tech too so it may be worth searching through the drawers to see how much you can get for your wanted tech.

Unwanted Clothes
Like with books, unwanted clothes are quite difficult to sell but I’ve found eBay to be the best. Children’s clothes sell well in bundles unless it’s a labelled item then you can sell it on it’s own for a good price. The same goes for adults clothes. I’ve found Topsop, Urban Outfitters and ASOS items sell really well on their own. Bulky items sell well if you do Buy It Now with free postage, for some reason £5 postage for a coat really puts some people  off buying but a coat at £15.99 with free postage sells well.

Unwanted Toys
With Little Miss constantly getting older we’re always growing out of toys. The best place to sell them is on a local selling group, Facebook is full of them and our area has at least 3 only for kids stuff. This way you don’t have to think about postage and if it’s a large item them buyer can come check it out before paying so you don’t have to deal with any rude messages. We’ve sold a lot of child and baby stuff this way from prams, to high chairs and even a cot.

If you’re still struggling to make ends meet one month (because if it’s every month you should probably seek help from Citizen’s Advice or completely over haul your financies) perhaps look into various loans as we all know life happens and perhaps you’ve had a big expense you weren’t expecting that has left you short. You could take out a short term loan and pay it back with your next wage.

Hopefully this post has helped you find some new ways to sell your unwanted goods. What do you usually use for selling online?
