Home Content // New Year, New Design?*

With the turn of the year a lot of people feel the need to redecorate their homes, be it because they have made some resolutions to do their home up, or simply because they feel it’s look is too 2017 (this is a thing, who knew?) I’ve teamed up with Oldrids & Downtown, retailer of dinner sets and a department store that has over 200 years’ experience, to find out what the trends look like for home design in 2018.

What Are We Leaving in 2017?
Before we attempt to make some predictions for 2018, lets have a look at what was popular in 2017 to make our living spaces feel homelier but still incredibly visually pleasing.

Last year saw The World’s Colour of the Year for 2017 as the brightest neutral, Greenery. The colour green did well in general, as we saw the use of this colour in fashion and commercial design – making it an instant hit with the general public. Greenery represents refreshment and revitalization, which a lot of people could relate to during that time.

Leaving your walls untreated was a huge hit in 2017, although it has been gaining popularity over the last few years. Gone are the days of the heavily embossed wall paper and a simple blank slate is the most aesthetically pleasing wall colour on social media. This trend was a brilliant way for homeowners to save both time and money when decorating, whilst giving them the flexibility to be versatile with their furniture.

For some reason, cork themed furniture was popular last year. This environmental friendly material was commonly used throughout the year to make items such as vases, glasses and even lampshades. However, they were often accompanied by a metallic surround that gave off a youthful yet premium vibe. And lets not forget the other popular material for the year, rose gold.

As for kitchenware, mason jars as glasses became the must have drink holder at both home and in restaurants.  Young or elderly, everyone had one in their kitchen. Accompanied with a striped straw, mason jars are the perfect item to serve a nice cool beverage.

Those were some of our standout trends from 2017 then. But what does 2018 look like?

Hello 2018
As I mentioned above, coloured metals came back last year with rose gold and copper in the spotlight but for 2018 gold and brass will be making their return and become a household essential. It’s important to understand that making it subtle is the key to making them look good.

With gold coming back, we think that a 70s theme will be popular throughout the home as well, so expect the return of wooden furniture. From units in your living room to your dressing table you will finally have plenty of storage space.

White white white. With the rise of social media having the whitest home possible has been a firm favourite. But in 2018, homeowners will find themselves mixing and matching with materials and colours to give their kitchens a bit more character. Everyone seems to have a white kitchen, white tiles and white marble worktops and, frankly, it’s a bit repetitive but finally this year we’ll be seeing a little more colour return to the accents.

When it comes to materials in your home rich colours are essential. This can really benefit the furniture you have in your room and make it pop to any visitors. Don’t go too wild with different colours, but at the same time don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t used before, such as a mustard tone or deep purple.

Personally, I’m so happy that colour is coming back into fashion as the greys and whites of 2018 always felt a bit cold to me. What home trend are you excited for in 2018?
