What Colours Do I Favour in my Own Home?

A favourite colour is a rather personal thing, don’t you think? Just like a favourite food or place. It can be different with every person. And the same goes for colours that people decorate their homes with. When I was a kid my bedroom was bright yellow as that was my mum’s favourite colour and she did the decorating. When I think about yellow I think about my mum, she’s bright and warm and sees the good in everybody. Even now there are elements of yellow scattered throughout her room. But my sister’s home is all white and grey with the exception of my nephew’s room. Even her cat matches her rooms and I think it reflects her classy personality style.

Julian Charles have put together a great guide on how colour in the home reflects your personality, it’s a great read and it was interesting to see what the colours I have in each room mean about me as a person.

The Lounge
Starting with the main room in our house, the lounge. The colour scheme is green, cream and brown with light coloured wood. I didn’t go into this house with any idea on how to decorate. I just picked up this green 3 piece suite and decided to go with that. The green sofa worked well with the brown carpet that was already in. I do like it as it doesn’t show the cat hair or dirt as much as another colour carpet would. I have a lighter brown rug and brown curtains. Most accessories in my room are cream, along with the walls which make this small room brighter. As I mentioned above my sofa and two arm chairs are green, and green is one of the colours I really like, after all Peter Pan wears green.

According to the e-book, green;

You don’t stick to house trends, but are happy to buy what you like when you see it. This means your house is full of wonderful knick knacks, and mis-matching furniture.

Yes, this sums up my house perfectly. I like colour and one of my favourite features in the room is actually my bookcase filled with multi-coloured books. I also have a lot of storage for LM’s toys.

The Kitchen
One of the things I fell in love with about this house was the kitchen. It’s not huge but it’s big enough and it’s bright and airy with wooden surface tops and white cupboards. It now needs lick of paint and a new floor but it’s still the heart of our home. Because of that I went with accessories of my favourite colour, teal. The toaster, the kettle, utensils and once upon a time even LM’s high chair were all teal. I loved the colour against the woodwork and white.

The e-book doesn’t include teal or even turquoise but it does include blue;

You hate discord or conflict, and can never hold a grudge for very long. This means you can be a bit of a people pleaser, but this isn’t always a bad thing. You prefer to have a close circle of friends anyway, over a large group of friends or acquaintances.

Yes, yes yes! It knows me so well. Being someone who struggles with anxiety I am someone with a small close circle of friends and I am totally a people pleaser. I don’t mind though, I just want the people I care about to be happy, especially Little Miss.

All other rooms in my house aren’t really themed. My bathroom needs decorated and it will be brown and turquoise (a combination of the lounge and kitchen), LM’s room is themed to Peter Pan rather than a colour and my bedroom is in desperate need of a direction but since I’m the only one who sees it I can’t bring myself to spend money on it.

However, ever room in my house has cream walls. Even the hallway. This is not because i’m following a trend, but because my house is small and the cream walls open the whole place up. The e-book doesn’t say anything about cream, but if I had my say I’d say I was drawn to it because I like to view life as a blank canvas and the type of life I lead adds the colour.

Do any of your favourite colours appear in your home decor?
