4 Ways to Pull Focus to a Feature Wall*

I think in a past life I was an interior designer. I love nothing more than going onto Pinterest and pinning loads of ideas on how to decorate homes that I don’t currently own. I love looking and different trends, some that work in big houses, some that work in small, some that are outdated and some that are very fashionable. One of the trends i’ve seen rise over the last decade, as fire places become outdated, is the feature wall. In case you don’t have a clue what i’m talking about, a feature wall is one of the four walls of a room that is decorated differently so it stands out. It’s supposed to pull the focus without the use of a furniture feature such as a fireplace as more and more people are pulling out the fire. In the UK people are then left with a flat wall that still has the chimney breast built in, in a lounge, this is your feature wall. They are most common in the lounge but people often also have them in other rooms such as bedrooms, dining rooms and even in the kitchen.

Today I’m sharing four ways you can decorate your feature wall so it pulls the focus of the room;

Make It Bold
First thing to do is make your feature wall stand out. Paint it a different (but complimenting) colour to the other three walls. Or you could go with a different texture such as white brick tiles, which are modern but still give the illusion of a fireplace without actually having one there. Some people pick patterned wallpaper and keep the other three walls are plain. You want to pick something that when someone enters the room their eyes are immediately drawn to that wall.

Mount a TV
One of the most popular ways to turn a wall into a feature wall is by mounting a TV. As I mentioned above, in years gone by the fireplace was the focal point of a room, but now with the rise of technology, most people have their furniture all arranged around a TV set. By mounting the TV on the wall the furniture of the room are not only pointing at the table, but towards the feature wall making it the focal point of your room.

Create a Hanging Gallery
My personal favourite is to create a hanging gallery on your feature wall. I’m one of these people who still loves old fashion photos. I love framing them and hanging them on my wall. If your house is a family home this is a great idea, perfect for sharing happy memories from holidays, triumphs and day to day life. There are loads of tips on arranging a hanging gallery in a way that is most aesthetically pleasing online. I used a template for my gallery in my hallway and it really made a difference.

Add a Mirror
Finally, you could hang a mirror on your feature wall. A mirror is a great focal point because it can create the illusion of space. Mirrors are always a good idea to make small rooms feel bigger so if you have a small lounge like I do, hanging a mirror on your feature wall will make the room appear to have more space than it does. Mirrors also automatically pull focus which is exactly the point of your feature wall.
