Tips to Keep Your Home Safe When Going on Holiday*

IMG_6360

As I’m someone who often goes away from home for various things and one of the things I do have to consider when we go away is making sure our house is safe. I thankfully live in a good area of our town so it’s not a huge worry but it is something that is always at the back of my mind. Here are a few tips to help ensure your house is secure while you’re out of town;

Make Sure your Plugs are Off
One of my biggest fears is that a fire will break out and burn my house down while I’m out, a bit dramatic I guess but there are a lot of memories in the four walls of our house that I would like to preserve. Before leaving I always do a quick sweep of the house to ensure all plugs that don’t need to be on are switched off. Not all plugs can be switched off such as the fridge, but everything else. Best of all, it saves you paying for electricity that isn’t technically being used.

Giving a Relative a Spare Key
Getting a spare key cut for a friend or relative (or at least someone you trust) is one of the best things I did. It’s even more important now I have a cat. You can even get your key cut using an online service these days if you’re unsure where to go for this. My mum now comes up and checks my house every day, but even if you are able to get someone to pop in every other day it’ll definitely give you peace of mind.

Have a Light on Timer Plug
If you’re really worried about the evenings when there is no one at home you can buy timer plugs that come on at a certain time of day to give the illusion that there is someone home. They’re realitively cheap to buy and they come in really handy not just for when you’re away but even if you have a lamp with a plug that isn’t easy to reach.

Install a Security System
At the end of the day, if you want to ensure your house is really secure you can pay to have a home security system installed. They range from a simple alarm, to alarms that call the police straight around, as well as cameras that watch blind spots of your property. This is the best way to really make sure your home will be safe while you’re out of town.
